Confession time!
More often than not, I am so caught up in photographing other people's families that I forget to capture my own memories. Almost two years ago, I begged and pleaded with my husband to let me spend a small fortune (for our family's budget) on my first DSLR camera. As soon as I opened the box and felt the camera in my hands, something clicked for me (haha corny pun- I know).
It is so easy and convenient to have a smart phone and just snap a quick pic in the moment and then forget about it. It wasn't until a few weeks ago, when my computer's hard drive crashed, that I realized how little I have been photographing my own family (with my "real camera"). It made me sad and depressed that I lost memories ( I always tell everyone else to back up their files and I never did it for my own files- just clients).
After a few weeks in a funk, I found myself outside watching my kids play in the deflated pool (we were cleaning/getting ready to refill). They were having a blast splashing around in two inches of dirty water. I was getting ready to snap a picture with my cell phone when it died before I could click the shutter button. I ran inside and grabbed my camera. I popped my 'nifty 50mm lens on and began capturing the fun!
I can officially say, I am out of my family memory photography funk! I encourage you to take a summer challenge with me and start capturing more family memories. Even if the kids are just slipping and sliding in the deflated pool. ;)
